SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Haley Scullion came off the bench Saturday and contributed her first career double-double to lead a group of seven Raiders with eight or more points, as the Shippensburg University women's basketball team never trailed in handing East Stroudsburg an 83-60 defeat in a PSAC First Round contest from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (19-10) snapped a seven-game PSAC playoff losing streak with Saturday's win – its first in the postseason since 2004. SU extended its home winning streak over East Stroudsburg (11-16) to 17 games, having not lost to the Warriors in Heiges Field House since 1987.
The Raiders will travel Tuesday night to play at West Chester in a 5:30 p.m. PSAC Quarterfinal from Hollinger Field House.
Shippensburg came out of the first media timeout on an 8-0 run to build a 14-4 advantage, eventually stretching its lead to 19 points at the intermission (42-23). ESU opened the second half on an 8-0 run but would not get any closer, as SU countered with a 17-6 run to pull away. The Raiders led by as many as 24 points in the second half.
SU was 22-of-26 at the free-throw line Saturday, a season-best rate of 84.6 percent, compared to ESU's 7-of-15 total. In the first half, sophomore
Lauren Gold got to the line 10 times and made nine of her attempts. She finished with 13 points, marking a team season best and tying her career high with 11 free throws.
Scullion provided career highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds on 7-of-8 shooting, leading the team in scoring for the first time in her career. She entered five minutes in after junior
Stephanie Knauer was charged with her second foul and displayed from confidence from the get-go, hitting her first shot and finishing the first half with eight points and eight rebounds.
Sophomore
Colleen Young scored 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting, adding four rebounds and three assists. Young is averaging 10 points per game over her last 10 contests.
Fellow sophomore
Morgan Griffith nearly notched another double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine boards. She hit a pair of three-pointers and also had three assists. Sophomore
Logan Snyder added nine points.
SU got 35 points from its bench Saturday, marking its most production from the reserves in the last 15 games. Freshman
Vicky Tumasz had nine points on 3-of-5 shooting, while fellow freshman
Kristin McGeough hit all three of her shots and tallied eight points and five rebounds in just nine minutes of play.
