SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team scored three times in the first half to score a statement victory over Bloomsburg in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener Wednesday night at David See Field, 3-1.
Shippensburg (1-0-2, 1-0-0 PSAC East) defender
Nate Herb scored a pair of set piece goals and midfielder
Zac Slevin opened his collegiate account with spectacular first half strike.
Bloomsburg (3-2-0, 0-1-0) settled for a late consolation goal from forward Owen Hollobaugh and were held to just three shots on goal overall in the contest despite increasing the offensive pressure in the second half.
The first-half blitz began on an SU corner kick in the 13th minute. Herb beat his mark to meet
Mathieu Barbirati's in-swinger in the center of the box, sending a powerful header into the top left corner of the net.
Shippensburg doubled its lead through Slevin in the 32nd minute. A deft header from
Cam Henry during the buildup created the opening for the freshman midfielder, who hammered an unstoppable volley past Bloomsburg keeper Drew Offenberg for his first Raider tally.
Herb secured his first career brace just six minutes later, connecting on an
Evan Brandt free kick with a header at the back post.
While SU stood out for its offensive prowess in the first 45 minutes, it was their defense that earned the plaudits in the second half.
The Raider defense did not let up against tremendous Bloomsburg pressure, allowing just two second half shots on goal. Shippensburg goalie
Ryan Krumenacker finished with two saves.
The win marked the Raiders' first over the Huskies in seven years (a 2-1 win on Sept. 18, 2019) and their first PSAC East victory since a 3-0 win over West Chester on Sept. 25, 2024.
Shippensburg returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. against West Chester at David See Field.
