SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer kicked off its season with a wild 2-2 draw against California (Pa.) on a sunny Saturday afternoon at David See Field.

Shippensburg (0-0-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead at halftime thanks to first half-tallies from Julius Dogan and Kyle Ganley. California (Pa.) (1-0-1) then evened the score with a pair of second half penalty kicks and held on to share the spoils despite being down to nine men for the final 14 minutes.

Dogan netted a goal in his SU debut to open the scoring in the 16th minute. Winger Coy Rush chased down a long ball near the end line and ripped a cross across the face of goal to Dogan, who settled it off his hip nicely for a tap-in at the far post.

Cal was issued its first straight red card midway through the opening half. Just a few minutes later, a well-weighted through ball from Cam Henry sprung Ganley on the wing, and the SU forward made no mistake, firing a thunderbolt into the top left corner to double the Raider lead.

The Vulcans came back to even the score with just 10 men in the second half, taking advantage of a pair of SU penalties – the first for a foul in the box in the 61st minute, and the second for a handball in the box in the 76th.

Seth Basinger, who scored both Cal penalties, was presented a straight red card for unsporting behavior after netting the tying goal.

SU bombarded the now 9-man Cal lineup with steady pressure in search of a possible winner until the final whistle, coming close with several attempts off the crossbar and side post of the Vulcan net.

In the end, the Raiders outshot the Vulcans 28-to-6, including an 8-to-4 edge in shots on target.

California goalkeeper Justin Brink was credited with five saves, while Ship's Ryan Krumenacker finished with two.

Next up, Shippensburg travels to Chestnut Hill next Saturday to battle the Griffins at 1 p.m.
