SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team had four of its players named Wednesday to the 2018 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings NCAA Division II All-Atlantic Region teams.
Â
Senior outfielder
Dalton Hoiles and redshirt-sophomore starting pitcher
Zack Sims earned All-Region First Team honors, while senior starting pitcher
Gabe Mosser and junior shortstop
Cash Gladfelter were named to the All-Region Second Team.
Â
Hoiles and Sims became consensus All-Region performers, after having previously received All-Atlantic Region Second Team honors by both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and the region's sports information directors through the D2CCA balloting.
Â
Mosser and Gladfelter earn their first All-Region honors of the offseason. For Mosser, it is the second consecutive year he has received All-Atlantic Region Second Team honors from the ABCA.
Â
Hoiles finished the season leading the Raiders with a .362 average, 10 home runs, 41 RBIs, 22 doubles, 41 runs and a .452 on-base percentage. All of those marks, save for the RBI total, are new single-season bests. His 22 doubles leads the Atlantic Region and tied the SU single-season school record. Hoiles also totaled 116 total bases, which ranks eighth in the Atlantic Region.
Â
Sims was the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) pitching wins leader at the completion of the regular season. His 2018 campaign included 81.2 innings pitched and 89 strikeouts – both single-season bests. He posted a 9-4 record and a 2.76 ERA, throwing four complete games and holding opponents to a .220 batting average against. Sims also produced a 1.11 WHIP (walks and hits/innings pitched), which ranks fourth in the region.
Â
Mosser finished the season with an 8-4 record and a 3.28 ERA over 74 innings. His six complete games rank second in the Atlantic Region (tied for 15th in Division II). His 93 strikeouts, eight wins and 4.43:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio all rank fourth in the Atlantic Region. Mosser limited opponents to a .231 batting average against.
Â
Gladfelter batted .324 this season with four home runs, 11 doubles and 33 RBIs. His five triples tied for second in the Atlantic Region. Defensively, he had a team-high 111 assists from his spot at shortstop. Gladfelter had an especially strong conclusion to the season: over his final 25 games, he hit .414 with 12 extra-base hits, 21 RBIs, 10 walks (.471 OBP) and scored 23 runs.
Â
The teams are voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Div. II All-America Committee. First-team selections are nominated for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. The ABCA/Rawlings All-Americans will be announced on Tuesday, May 29.
