Men’s Basketball Falls in PSAC Semifinals to West No. 2 Seed Gannon, 81-70

SU will now await its NCAA Tournament fate (selection show: Sunday 10:30 PM)

Video to come.

The Shippensburg University men's basketball team could not overcome a double-digit deficit it sustained in the second half on Saturday, as the Raiders dropped an 81-70 decision to West No. 2 seed Gannon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Semifinal matchup from East Stroudsburg University's Koehler Fieldhouse.

Shippensburg (23-7) got the 20th double-double of the season from senior Dustin Sleva, who became the 13th player in PSAC history to surpass 2,000 career points. Sleva finished with 28 points, 12 rebounds and two assists. It was his 94th career game posting double figures in points.

Sophomore John Castello scored 20 points (18 in the first half) and added eight rebounds, while junior Antonio Kellem scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Seniors Justin McCarthur and Clay Conner combined for 11 assists.

Gannon (22-8) went on a 12-0 run beginning at 18:31 of the second half to flip a 38-38 game into a 50-38 advantage. The Golden Knights made 5-of-7 from three-point range after halftime and shot 53 percent from the field overall during the final 20 minutes. SU could only get as close as seven points during the last 10 minutes of play.

The Golden Knights entered as the No. 2 team in the league in rebounding margin (+9.0) and maintained that production on Saturday, out-rebounding the Raiders by a 47-30 margin. Frank Webb had a double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds) off the bench to lead four Gannon players that each had at least five boards. Jair Green had 25 points.

In Saturday's game, the two teams combined for just 11 turnovers (six by SU, five by GU), with each handing out 17 assists. Both teams attempted 12 free-throws. GU managed nine more shot attempts than the Raiders and made two more free throws (11-of-12).

The Golden Knight three-point barrage in the second half was a stark contrast to their season output both overall (4.0 average per game) and especially against Shippensburg – Gannon had been 2-of-19 (10.5 percent) from three-point range in its three previous halves against the Raiders.

Shippensburg will now await its NCAA Tournament fate, which will be revealed during the NCAA Division II Selection Show. The program will air live at 10:30 p.m. Sunday on ncaa.com.

Notes: Sleva now has 2,017 career points…his double-double was the 56th of his career…Sleva now has 1,107 career rebounds, just 11 shy of tying Keith Hill's school record…SU has matched its single-season school record for career three-pointers with 317 – the same amount made by the team last year…the Raiders were competing in the PSAC Semifinals for the third consecutive season.
