JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – The Shippensburg University baseball team came up short in its opening game of the 2017 NCAA Atlantic Region Baseball Championships, dropping a 6-0 decision to conference rival Millersville in a matchup under the lights from Russell Diethrick Park.
Â
Shippensburg (30-23-1) fell behind by five runs to Millersville (34-17) in the sixth inning before inclement weather forced a 55-minute delay in the proceedings. The Raiders managed just one hit before the rain came through and finished with just two hits and two walks against Marauder southpaw Cordell Shannon.
Junior
Grant Hoover delivered the first hit of the game for the Raiders in the fifth on an opposite-field single with two outs. The Raiders got two runners on in the fifth and senior
Ryan McMillen crushed a shot to deep left-center field, coming just a couple feet shy of a three-run home run.
Â
Junior
Andy Crum got the start for the Raiders and pitched four innings, allowing five runs (four earned) while striking out five. The Marauders scored one run in the second, another in the third, and three runs in the fourth.
Â
Redshirt-freshman
Zack Sims threw three shutout innings of relief, striking out two while allowing just two hits. Freshman
Jacob Menders worked the eighth, allowing one run.
Â
