JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team remained alive in the 2017 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Baseball Championships on Friday night with a 5-4 victory over Slippery Rock in an elimination game on a cold night at Point Stadium.
Â
Shippensburg (30-21-1) defeated Slippery Rock (27-20) for the second time in the tournament to eliminate the Western Division No. 3 seed. The Rock got the winning run to the plate with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning but sophomore closer
Michael Hope induced a fielder's choice and a flyout for his sixth save of the season. SU improved to 7-5 this season in one-run games.
Â
Junior
Andy Crum delivered a sterling pitching performance to boost the Raiders Friday evening, throwing a career-high eight innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on 111 pitches. Crum scattered eight hits, walked two and struck out three to improve his record to 5-3.
Â
Sophomore
Cash Gladfelter and senior
Ryan McMillen continued their hot streaks this tournament, combining for five hits at the top of the order. Gladfelter, batting in the No. 2 spot, singled in each of his first three at-bats. Sophomores
Tommy Baggett and
Drew Bene each delivered two hits.
Â
Shippensburg reversed an early 1-0 deficit with two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. McMillen led off the bottom of the fourth with a bunt single, and Gladfelter singled him to third (he advanced to second on the throw). Junior
Dalton Hoiles plated McMillen on a groundout, and Gladfelter scored on a single off the wall by senior
Jake Kennedy.
Â
In the fifth, Bene led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Baggett connected on a single into center field that moved Bene to third, who then would score in the next at-bat on a wild pitch. McMillen would later single home Baggett to make it 4-1 Raiders, chasing Rock starter Wyatt Daugherty.
Â
In a 4-2 game in the eighth, SU took advantage of a pair of two-out walks when Baggett slashed a single up the middle that scored sophomore
Jack Goertzen. The Rock answered in the bottom half with a moonshot solo home run from their All-PSAC catcher Tyler Walters.
Â
Entering the bottom of the ninth, and holding a 5-3 lead, Hope entered to get the final three outs. SRU snuck a double in between two outfielders with one out, and singled him home to make it 5-4, before Hope hunkered down for the final two outs.
Â
Shippensburg will face Seton Hill (34-18) at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, weather permitting. The Griffins are currently 2-0 in the tournament, having defeated East No. 1 seed West Chester and East No. 3 seed Lock Haven. A loss eliminates the Raiders from the tournament.
