Seniors
Sam Beckerleg and
Liz Ross set school records with all-conference finishes on Saturday to highlight the first day of competition for the Shippensburg University women's indoor track & field team at the 2015 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships being contested at Edinboro University's Zafirovski Dome.
Beckerleg scored 3,356 points in the pentathlon – a third-place finish that breaks Rebekah Newhart's 2010 record by 156 points. She paced all competitors in the shot put, throwing 37 feet, 6 ¾ inches, ran a PR in the 60-meter hurdles of 9.63 seconds, cleared a new height of 5 feet, 3 ¾ inches in the high jump, landed a solid long jump of 16 feet, 9 ¾ inches and ran a solid indoor 800 meters of 2:37.92 for her nearly 200-point personal best.
Ross improved upon her school-record weight throw of last weekend by more than two feet, achieving the first 17-meter mark of her career on her last throw of the competition. It resulted in a second-place mark of 56 feet, 4 ¾ inches – signifying her first PSAC scoring effort in the weight throw.
Also in the field, sophomore
Sarah Hunt finished second in the long jump, scoring for the first time in the event with a top mark of 18 feet, 3 inches. Freshman
Kali Hepner achieved a new personal-best clearance in the pole vault, placing sixth after getting over the bar at 11 feet, 2 ¼ inches on her second attempt.
Victorious on Saturday was the 4x800-meter relay team of sophomore
Erika Huffman, sophomore
Laura Kibathi, senior
April Schlusser and redshirt-freshman
Kiana Tucker. The quartet ran 9:36.56 – posting a nine-second win over Edinboro.
Huffman and Kibathi both ran on SU's relay last season that placed sixth in 9:45.77 – that time was just .02 seconds slower than second-place Edinboro's time on Saturday.
Sophomore
Casey Norton, who placed fourth in the 3K last year, earned an All-PSAC finish in the 5K this year by running 17:39.31. It is an eight-second indoor personal best for Norton in just her second indoor 5K race, the first of which was run two weeks ago in Boston.
