SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's indoor track & field team heads back to Edinboro this weekend for competition in the 2015 PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships being contested Saturday and Sunday from the Mike S. Zafirovski Sports and Recreation Dome.
Ticket prices are set by the PSAC at $7 for adults and $2 for students. All students from PSAC institutions are admitted free with valid ID.
Saturday's competition begins at 11:30 a.m. with long jump and is expected to last through approximately 5 p.m. The triple jump starts Sunday around 11 a.m. with the awards ceremony slated for 3:15 p.m.
Shippensburg boasts five top seeds in events entering the weekend. But if the Raiders are to bring home the conference championship, they will have to take on the likes of talented squads from Slippery Rock and Bloomsburg.
"I try to stress to our women that it doesn't matter what it says on paper, as long as you qualify for the meet and get to the meet, you can do great things," head coach
Dave Osanitsch '96 said. "That's really what we've been stressing to the women's team. We're in the competition; we're in the hunt. It's not an unrealistic goal to try to win."
Osanitsch added that in the PSAC Championships, momentum plays a large factor and the Raiders will be looking for someone to start the "snowball" effect.
Among the top-seeded Raiders are junior
Megan Lundy and senior
Bri Fells, who are ranked 1-2 in the 400 meters. They formed a 4x400-meter relay squad with freshman
Lindsay Sheehan and redshirt-freshman
Kiana Tucker that broke the PSAC all-time indoor record.
Sophomore
Sarah Hunt is rounding into form as an NCAA-caliber jumper; she is the top seed in both the long jump and triple jump. Senior
Liz Ross and sophomore
Tamara Ovejera are ranked first and third respectively in the shot put, while Ross is also seeded third in the weight throw after a school record set last week.
"One or two people don't have to carry all the weight," Osanitsch added. "You have to go event by event. If one thing doesn't go our way, let's not panic. You can only control what you do."
Osanitsch expects a tight race for the title especially with Slippery Rock and Bloomsburg, and he is excited to see how the meet plays out. Based upon the improvements Osanitsch has seen among the women throughout this season, he believes the Raiders are ready to make a run at the two favorites.
"We're excited. This is what you work all year for," Osanitsch said. "We're excited to see what these women can do and to see what kind of personality this team takes on."
