SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shippensburg University freshman shooting guard
Justin McCarthur was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Freshman of the Week on Monday afternoon by the league office after averaging 13 points per game in SU's first back-to-back conference wins since February 2013.

On Saturday against Mansfield, McCarthur had what head coach
Chris Fite described as his greatest game so far as a Raider (
Carlisle Sentinel recap), scoring 20 points (two shy of his career high) on 5-of-8 shooting and 8-of-9 at the free-throw line while leading SU with 37 minutes in the game.

McCarthur wore several hats in Saturday's game, tying his career high with six assists to just two turnovers and grabbing six rebounds while point guard
Abe Massaley played 18 minutes because of foul trouble. Â

On Wednesday at Clarion, McCarthur had six points on 2-of-3 shooting. He made 3-of-5 from three-point range on the week.

This season, McCarthur is second on the team in scoring (12.6 points per game), assists (36), steals (12) and minutes (31.2). His 29 three-pointers also pace the Raiders.

McCarthur is SU's first PSAC East Freshman of the week honoree since Tyhiem "Reds" Perrin on Feb. 11, 2013.

Shippensburg returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when it travels to face Kutztown at Keystone Arena.
