Sean Minford Breaks School Record in 100 Breaststroke on Day 3 of 2013 PSAC Championships

SU senior has broken school records in back-to-back days, this time surpassing Chris Flook’s 1992 record by swimming 56.70 seconds

Senior Sean Minford broke the 21-year-old school record in the 100-yard breaststroke on Saturday to highlight the third day of competition for the Shippensburg University men's swimming team from the 2013 PSAC Swimming Championships being held at Cumberland Valley High School.

In the prelims, Minford qualified in third position after completing his swim in 56.70 seconds, which edges Chris Flook's 1992 mark of 56.77 seconds. Minford entered with a seed of 56.80 seconds, and placed fifth in the finals after a night-time swim of 57.25 seconds. It is his highest career place in the event after finishing eighth as a freshman and 10th as a sophomore.

SU had one other swimmer in the finals on Saturday. Freshman Jake Dunnigan took fifth in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:10.13 – a six-second PR. He reached the finals after swimming 4:12.78 in the morning.

Senior Stew Conard led a group of three Raiders in the 400 IM consolation finals, placing 10th. Freshman Jordan Metz was 11th with a 16-second PR of 4:16.80 and sophomore Tyler Minford placed 14th with a 10-second season PR of 4:24.42.

Three Raiders competed in the consolation finals of the 100-yard butterfly. Freshman Stefan Szilagyi placed 10th in 52.27 seconds; senior Eric Naylor was 12th in 52.56 seconds and junior Joey Borgioni took 15th place with a time of 53.66 seconds.

Sophomore Jeff Mikitka swam a PR in the 200-yard freestyle for a 12th-place finish in 1:45.95 while Naylor placed 15th. In the 100-yard backstroke, sophomore Tyler Robertson improved his season and career bests with a 11th-place time of 54.38 seconds while junior Chris Bankert finished 14th.

Sean Minford, Dunnigan, Metz and Mikitka placed sixth in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:05.68.

The fourth and final day of competition begins with prelims at 10 a.m. Sunday with the finals session to start at approximately 5 p.m.
