The Red Raiders are coached by Mark 'Mac' Maciejewski '92/'96M, who has guided the team to a 17-4 record since the start of the 2011 season. It is the best start through 21 games by a Red Raider head coach in 108 seasons of organized football at Shippensburg University.

On the opposite sideline is IUP head coach Curt Cignetti, who has guided the Crimson Hawks to a 16-4 record since the start of the 2011 season. Cignetti, a former assistant coach at Alabama under Nick Saban, guided IUP this season to its first PSAC Western Division title since 2006.

The Red Raiders were picked to finish fifth in the 2012 PSAC Eastern Division Preseason Coaches' Poll before going on to win the division and represent the East in the State Game, where it will face its previously scheduled opponent for the final game of the regular season – IUP.

The Red Raiders were also picked to finish fifth in the 2009 PSAC Eastern Division Preseason Coaches' Poll before going on to win the division and represent the East in the State Game, where it hosted its previously scheduled opponent for the weekend – California (Pa.). SU defeated the Vulcans, 42-35, to claim the 2009 PSAC Football Championship.

IUP was voted into a tie for first in the PSAC Western Division Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Crimson Hawks are fifth in the NCAA Atlantic Region rankings and boast several standout players, including running back Harvie Tuck, safety Johnny Franco and defensive tackle Carl Thornton.

Saturday's game is the first meeting between the two teams in six years. SU has played every other PSAC school at least once since it last faced the Crimson Hawks on Nov. 3, 2007.

IUP leads the all-time series 44-17-4 and has won 20 consecutive meetings dating back to 1988. Shippensburg is 5-24-2 all-time on the road against the Crimson Hawks. SU's last win at IUP came in 1981 – a 26-3 victory.

Shippensburg enters Saturday's game with the nation's No. 1 total offense and No. 1 passing offense in addition to the No. 27 total defense. The Red Raiders are averaging 566.5 yards per game on offense (including 411 yards per game through the air) while yielding 327.5 yards per game on defense. SU is also averaging 52.7 points per game, which ranks second in the nation behind Henderson State (54.5 ppg).

IUP enters Saturday's game with the nation's No. 1 total defense, allowing just 239.9 yards per game. The Crimson Hawks are second in Division II in scoring defense (11.3 ppg), second in rushing defense (69.6 ypg) and 13th in pass defense (170.3 ypg) while ranking seventh in turnover margin (+15). Meanwhile, their rushing attack ranks eighth in Division II, averaging 285.2 yards per contest.

Both teams rank among the nation's Top 10 teams in turnover margin. SU has the third-best margin along with Northwest Missouri State (+17 – 30 takeaways, 13 giveaways) while IUP has the seventh-best margin (+15 – 26 takeaways, 11 giveaways).

The offensive line play of both teams has been exceptional. IUP has yielded just six sacks this season and is averaging 5.8 yards per rush. Shippensburg has only allowed 10 sacks despite the team attempting 442 passes this season.

SU junior quarterback Zach Zulli leads the nation in total offense, averaging 402.7 yards per game. He is also second in passing efficiency (182.16) behind Henderson State sophomore quarterback Kevin Rodgers. Zulli has completed 274-of-411 passes this season for 3,845 yards, 49 touchdowns and just five interceptions.

IUP senior running back Harvie Tuck ranks third in the nation in rushing, averaging 154.8 yards per game. Tuck has run for 1,019 yards and nine touchdowns this season and has over 4,200 rushing yards in his career.

SU senior wide receiver Jacob Baskerville is ninth in receiving yards per game, averaging 107.5 per contest. Baskerville became just the third player in school history to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in a season last week. Through 10 games, he has 64 receptions for 1,075 yards and 12 touchdowns.

With 25 receiving yards on Saturday, sophomore wide receiver Trevor Harman can become the fourth player in school history to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in a season. Harman has 60 receptions in 2012 and has already broken the school record for receiving touchdowns with 17 this season. One more receiving touchdown will make him the sole career record holder for touchdown catches.

Shippensburg's defense has set a school record this season with five defensive touchdowns (three on fumbles, two on interceptions). The Red Raiders are also among the nation's Top 25 teams in sacks and tackles for loss. Senior linebacker Cody Fleming needs just one tackle for loss to set the SU career record currently held by Maciejewski.
