SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's volleyball team had its most efficient hitting match of the season Tuesday night inside Heiges Field House to come away with an impressive PSAC Quarterfinal victory over Eastern Division rival West Chester, 3-0, by set scores of 25-22, 25-15 and 25-23.
Shippensburg (27-10) advances to the PSAC Semifinals for the first time since 2009 and will face Gannon, the Western Division's No. 1 seed, on Friday in the second of two matches from the Hammermill Center in Erie.
The Raiders were credited with just seven attack errors – their fewest in a 58-match span – and hit .250 from the floor. SU also had 10 blocks and did not have a reception error until the final 20 service points of the match.
Junior outside hitter
Jill Edwards led the Raiders with 13 kills and hit .261, while senior setter
Andrea Heimsoth provided 29 assists, 10 digs and three block assists.
Freshman
Taylor Gottshall was exceptional in the middle Tuesday night, ripping eight kills without an error and hitting .471 while totaling three solo blocks and four block assists. Gottshall now has 107 block assists this season – the second most in SU single-season history behind
Libby Woffindin's 118 in 2010.
Freshman
Faith Athey also manned the middle well with six kills, three blocks and a .312 hitting percentage while senior right side
Rachel Smicker slammed five kills without an error, hitting .357.
Senior libero
Lauren Murphy was solid in the back row, contributing 17 digs. Freshman
Natasha Gibble chipped in with seven digs, four assists and one ace while freshman
Laura Plank had four digs.
