The Shippensburg University field hockey team has been selected as the No. 1 seed from the South Region in the 2012 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championships, earning a bye into the national semifinals to be held Nov. 9 at 1 pm. from Lowell, Massachusetts.
Shippensburg (17-2) will be making its ninth appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament, all under head coach
Bertie Landes. With the exception of the 2007 season, the Raiders have reached the national tournament every year since 2003.
West Chester (17-2), the 2012 PSAC Champions, earned the No. 2 seed in the South region and will host No. 3 seed IUP at 1 p.m. Saturday from Vonnie Gros Field. The Golden Rams defeated the Crimson Hawks, 2-1, in the PSAC semifinals on Friday. The winner of that game will face the Raiders in the national semifinals.
Massachusetts-Lowell (18-3), the 2012 NE-10 Champions, earned the No. 1 seed from the North region and the right to host the national championships. The Riverhawks will face the winner of a NCAA quarterfinal match between No. 2 seed Merrimack (16-3) and Bentley (11-7).
In non-Championship Festival years, the NCAA alternates the sight of the national championships between the North and the South regions. SU was the No. 1 seed in the South in 2010, but did not host as NCAA Division II held its Fall Championships Festival in Louisville that year. Bloomsburg, a South region team, hosted last year's national championships.
