OMAHA, Neb. – Redshirt junior wrestling co-captain
Chris Barrick will be competing for the second consecutive season from the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships this Friday and Saturday, hosted by the University of Nebraska at Omaha from Sapp Fieldhouse.
Barrick earned a spot in the national championships two weeks ago after a second-place finish from the Super Region I duals hosted by Pittsburgh-Johnstown. A 3-2 decision at 174 pounds over Newberry's Curtis Chenowith secured the appearance.
Last season, Barrick earned a pin in his opening match at the national championships but came up short of All-American status after losing two consecutive matches.
Barrick will enter the national duals as a new member of Shippensburg's Top 10 career wins leaders. His current total of 85 victories puts him in sole possession of ninth place in SU history, just one win behind Mark Szanca '84 and Matt Mentzer '96.
Ironically, Barrick is on a very similar career path to Shippensburg's last national champion, Corey Jacoby '05. Both wrestlers finished in second place at the regional meet during their junior seasons, with each also losing the championship matches in overtime. Both times, in 2005 and 2010, the regional tournament was held at Pittsburgh-Johnstown.
Continuing the parallels, each wrestler entered the national tournament with just three losses on the season. Barrick's 2009-10 record currently stands at 22-3. Finally, the national tournament will be held this season from Nebraska-Omaha, the first time the school has hosted since 2005 - the year that Jacoby won his national championship.
“Chris was ranked in the region all year and I think he peaked at the right time,” head coach
Seth Bloomquist said after the regional meet. “He hasn't reached his goals yet but he certainly has reached everyone's expectations.”
