Impressive Second-Day Performances Rank the Raiders In Third Place At PSAC Championships

Day Two Results

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – A number of Raider swimmers posted solid performances on the second day of the 2009 PSAC Championships that put the Shippensburg men’s swim team in position to strike the leaders over the final two days of competition having totaled a third-place score of 161 points.

The evening opened with the 200-yard freestyle relay, as senior Gabe Oropollo, sophomore Tim Smullen, senior John Miller and junior Nate Ryan earned sixth place with a time of 1:26.71.

Oropollo and Ryan both qualified for the finals of the 50-yard freestyle and finished in sixth and eighth place, respectively. The top individual finisher of the day for the Raiders was sophomore Josh Nyce, who took fifth place in the 200-yard IM in 1:56.97 while Miller finished eighth in the event.

In the 500-yard freestyle, junior Drew Hagerich qualified for the finals and finished sixth with a time of 4:42.90. Freshman Richard Deley won the consolation final in 4:45.17, while sophomores DJ Winterhoff and Alan Snyder also scored for Shippensburg.

The 400-yard medley relay team of freshman Joe Keefe, freshman Evan Manning, senior Brian Taylor and Miller earned seventh place in the final event of the evening with a time of 3:34.85.

Overall, Shippensburg is in eighth place with a total of 81.5 points. Clarion leads after two days of competition with a total of 206 points, while West Chester, California (Pa.), Gannon and Indiana (Pa.) round out the Top 5.

West Chester is currently in the lead with 252 points, while Clarion is in second place with 196 points. IUP is 34 points behind the Raiders in fourth place, while Gannon rounds out the Top 5. Saturday’s competition begins with preliminary qualifying at 10 a.m.
