AKRON, Ohio – The Shippensburg men’s swim team showcased its depth on the final day of competition at the 2008 Zippy Invitational hosted by the University of Akron as seven different swimmers recorded top-ten finishes in addition to the 400-yard freestyle relay squad achieving the feat for the Raiders on Sunday.

Gabe Oropollo, sophomore
Tim Smullen, junior
Nate Ryan and senior
John Miller finished fifth with a solid time of 3:08.69, another improvement from the performance at the Patriot Invitational.
Individually, Miller finished the 200-yard breaststroke in fifth place with a time of 2:10.19, while freshman
Evan Manning continued his excellent weekend with a sixth-place turn in the event with a time of 2:12.07.
Another newcomer continuing his progression is freshman
Richard Deley, who finished fifth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:56.28. Junior
Evan Wentzel won the consolation final with a time of 1:56.62.
Sophomore
Josh Nyce finished sixth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:56.85 with junior
Shane Wolter just one place behind with a time of 1:57.84. Oropollo swam the 100-yard freestyle in 47.41 seconds for a 10th-place finish, while Smullen was one place behind in 47.69 seconds.
Overall, the men’s squad finished in sixth place with a total of 1,019.5 points, less than two points behind Division I Xavier for fifth-place.
The men’s swim team will return to action on Jan. 16, 2009 with a home meet against Bloomsburg from Donald Miller Pool that is set to begin at 5 p.m.
