AKRON, Ohio - Two Raider relay squads improved their season-best times while two individuals earned top-five finishes to highlight the second day of competition for the Shippensburg men’s swim team at the 2008 Zippy Invitational hosted by the University of Akron.

The 800-yard freestyle relay squad of junior Shane Wolter, senior John Miller, freshman Richard Deley and sophomore Josh Nyce earned fourth place with a strong time of 6:58.46. Shippensburg improved its time in the event by nearly two seconds from the performance at the Patriot Invitational and has bettered the time from last year’s conference meet by nearly 13 seconds.

The 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore Tim Smullen, senior Gabe Oropollo, senior Brian Taylor and junior Nate Ryan placed sixth with a time of 1:35.41, an improvement of nearly one second from two weeks ago.

Two Raider swimmers earned top-five finishes. Taylor finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly with an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 51.45 seconds, while freshman Evan Manning just missed an NCAA ‘B’ cut time in the 100-yard breaststroke with a fourth-place finish in 59.48 seconds.

Oropollo completed the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.19 to win the consolation final, while Nyce won the consolation final of the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:14.81.

Three men finished in the Top 10 for the 200-yard freestyle. Wolter earned an NCAA ‘B’ cut time with a seventh-place finish in 1:43.75, while Miller finished eighth in 1:44.40. Deley bested Miller with a time of 1:44.03 but was in the consolation final and earned 10th place.

The men remain in sixth place with a total of 649.5 points. The final day of competition begins at 9 a.m. tomorrow from the Ocasek Natatorium on the campus of the University of Akron.
