Current and Former Red Raider Baseball Players Having Summer Baseball Success

Kulp raking in NYCBL; Wright among alums pitching in minors

Three current Red Raiders are receiving regular playing time in the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL) this summer while three Red Raider alums are pitching well for their respective clubs in the minor leagues.

Cody Kulp (Amsterdam Mohawks) leads the NYCBL with eight home runs and ranks second in total bases with 71. He has been raking all summer, batting .302 through 38 games (including a team-high 35 starts). Kulp has 24 runs scored, 26 RBIs and five stolen bases to his credit.

Ben Miller (Cooperstown Hawkeyes) has appeared in 32 games for the Cooperstown Hawkeyes, making 26 starts. He has posted a .219 batting average with four doubles, nine RBIs and 12 runs scored.

Nick Umberger (Oneonta Outlaws) has been steady on the mound, posting a 3.13 earned-run average through 46 innings. Umberger has appeared in eight games, making six starts, and struck out 26 batters. Opposing batters are swinging just .231 against Umberger, but the southpaw has walked 16 batters and thrown six wild pitches.

The NYCBL is a summer wood bat development league for professional baseball that gives college players who have not yet signed a professional contract the opportunity to develop their skills at a higher level of play.

On the pro circuit, three former Red Raider hurlers have kept busy on the mound.

Englebrook Rojo Johnson
Evan Englebrook '04 has had a wild journey this season. Englebrook began the year with the Astros in spring training before spending the first half of the season in AAA with the Round Rock Express (including a meeting with short-lived teammate Rojo Johnson), striking out 27 in 28.2 innings but posting a 5.97 ERA.

The Mechanicsburg native was designated for assignment in June and removed from the 40-man roster but remained with the organization. Two weeks later, Englebrook was demoted to AA and has thrown 13.2 innings thus far for the Corpus Christi Hooks, posting a 3.95 ERA with 10 strikeouts.

Ross Buckwalter
Having made a recovery from a labrum tear, Ross Buckwalter '07 has appeared in 20 games for the Dunedin Blue Jays in the Florida State League (high-A). Through 24.2 innings, Buckwalter has walked just five batters while striking out 21 en route to a 2.55 ERA. He has allowed just 26 hits, none of which are round trippers.

McClure native Matt Wright has continued to mesmerize hitters in the Midwest League with the Lansing Lugnuts. Wright has struck out 55 batters in 43 innings, posting a 2.72 ERA in 24 appearances. He has surrendered just 31 hits and 15 walks and held opponents to a .200 batting average against.

Wright has continued his weird splits in terms of home and road performance. In 17 innings away from Cooley Stadium this season, Wright has allowed just one earned run (0.53 ERA). Meanwhile, Wright has a 4.15 ERA in 26 innings at home. It mirrors a trend from 2008 in which Wright had a 1.71 road ERA and a 5.63 home ERA pitching for the Auburn Doubledays.
