SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior swimmer #
Shane Wolter# was selected to the 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Men's At Large Second Team for the College Division of District II, which encompasses all Division II, Division III, NAIA and junior colleges in the states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
Wolter, who won a PSAC Top 10 award in April, is one of just four PSAC athletes selected to the first or second teams and one of 22 student-athletes honored overall in District 2. As a criminal justice major, he held the highest grade-point average (GPA) of any member of the men's swimming team at 3.646 entering his graduation in May.
At the PSAC Swimming Championships in February, Wolter became the first individual conference champion for the SU men's swimming team since Mike Owen in 2007 as the Red Raiders finished in third place as a team. Wolter was unable to achieve an automatic qualifying time in the 1,650-yard freestyle but distanced the rest of the field by six seconds with a provisional cut of 16:06.96.
He earned all-conference honors in the mile for the second consecutive year after a second-place turn in 2009 and has now completed five All-PSAC swims in his career. Overall, Wolter was a four-time All-PSAC performer, finishing third in the 500 free (4:37.01) and contributing to the 400 and 800 freestyle relays. He held the team's best times in four events and was an NCAA 'B' cut performer in the 200, 500 and 1,650 freestyle.
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selects Academic All-America® teams in 12 programs. A first team and second team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions. The men's at-large award includes nominees in the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
