LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Shippensburg senior men's swimmer
Shane Wolter was named on Thursday morning to the 2009-10 PSAC Winter Top 10 squad. Wolter, a first-time honoree, is the just the second men's swimmer to receive this award in school history and first since Mike Robinson in 2002.
Wolter became the first individual PSAC champion for the Shippensburg University men's swimming team since Mike Owen in 2007 as the Red Raiders finished in third place at the 2010 PSAC Swimming Championships held at Cumberland Valley High School. Wolter was unable to achieve an automatic qualifying time in the 1,650-yard freestyle but distanced the rest of the field by six seconds with a provisional cut of 16:06.96.
He earned all-conference honors in the mile for the second consecutive year after a second-place turn in 2009 and has now completed five All-PSAC swims in his career. Overall, Wolter was a four-time All-PSAC performer, finishing third in the 500 free (4:37.01) and contributing to the 400 and 800 freestyle relays. He held the team's best times in four events and was an NCAA 'B' cut performer in the 200, 500 and 1,650 freestyle.
Wolter also holds the highest grade-point average (GPA) of any member of the men's swimming team. He currently boasts a 3.646 GPA while seeking a major in criminal justice.
Shippensburg was the only school to have all three of its nominees selected for the award. Senior women's basketball forward
Lauren Beckley and sophomore women's indoor track and field star
Neely Spence also received PSAC Winter Top 10 awards on Thursday.
It is the first time since the Spring of 2003 that Shippensburg has had three Top 10 award winners in one season. That year, Page Heath (women's lacrosse), Jared Krebs (baseball) and Kelly Stewart (women's track and field) were recognized by the conference.
For each of the three athletic seasons, five male and female winners are voted on by the conference's sports information directors. Each school is allowed to nominate two male candidates and two female candidates. The winter campaign includes the sports of indoor track and field, wrestling, swimming and basketball.
