MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - Three Red Raiders reached the championship finals of the 100-yard breaststroke on Saturday as the Shippensburg University men's swimming team remained in third place after the third day of competition from the 2010 PSAC Swimming Championships held at Cumberland Valley High School.
Shippensburg has scored 339.5 points and leads Edinboro by 54.5 points. Clarion is in second place with 441.5 points, while 11-time defending champion West Chester is once again in the lead with 553 points.
The trio of breaststroke swimmers earned sixth through eighth place. Sophomore
Evan Manning led the group with a time of 59.45, while junior
Derek Yeager finished in 59.98 and freshman
Sean Minford had a time of 1:00.00. Sophomore
Tyler Prete, competing in his home pool, added points in the consolation final after tapping the wall in 1:01.51.
The top individual finisher on Saturday was freshman
Eric Naylor, who finished third in the 100-yard butterfly with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 51.39. Senior
Evan Wentzel also reached the championship final and finished seventh with a time of 52.27.
Senior
Shane Wolter placed fifth in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:11.70. Sophomore
Mitch Paczesniak (4:19.38) and Manning (4:29.78) added points in the consolation final.
Junior
Tim Smullen was SU's leader in the 200-yard freestyle, placing sixth with a time of 1:44.73.
Senior
Nate Ryan had an eighth-place turn in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.11 seconds. Sophomore
Joe Keefe added points in the consolation final with a 11th-place time of 53.97 seconds.
The 800-yard freestyle relay of senior
Drew Hagerich, Smullen, Naylor and Wolter nearly cracked second place but finished in third with a time of 6:57.91. The 200-yard medley relay of Keefe, Yeager, Naylor and Ryan finished fourth with a time of 1:35.71 and finished just 42 one-hundredths out of third place.
The final day of competition begins at 10 a.m. Sunday with preliminary qualifying. The senior ceremony begins at 4:55 p.m. with final sessions to start at 5 p.m.
