LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Shippensburg University lacrosse team had five of its players recognized on Wednesday afternoon with selections to the PSAC Eastern Division all-conference squad, including first-team honors for junior midfielder
Gayle Kuntzmann and senior defender
Beth Long.
In addition to Kuntzmann, who received her second consecutive first-team award, and Long, who was honored for the third time in her career, the conference awarded second-team honors to junior forward
Liz DiNunno, sophomore forward
Rachael Murray and senior defender
Kelsey Browning.
The 2009 season is the first in which the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) has competed in a divisional format and as a result this is the first year with separate Eastern and Western Division all-conference teams. The Lady Raiders have now had 10 all-conference selections in three seasons under head coach
Naomi Radio.
Long, a first-team selection in 2007 and a second-team selection in 2008, was once again rock steady at defense. She led the team in draw controls (29) and finished second in groundballs (42) while also scoring 12 goals. Last year, Long ranked second on the team in groundballs and caused turnovers while leading the team during her sophomore campaign in groundballs. She only missed two games in her career.
Kuntzmann continued her role as an all-around force for the Lady Raiders, tying for the team lead in goals (36) with Murray. She once again led the team with 58 groundballs in addition to leading the team with 40 caused turnovers, a mark that ranks fifth in Division II. She won 25 draw controls and compiled eight assists to lead the team in points with 44.
Browning has been an integral defender for Shippensburg and has displayed a solid skill level during her career. This year, she once again started all 17 games and tallied seven goals while finishing second on the team with 22 caused turnovers. As a junior, she finished third in caused turnovers and fourth in groundballs. She has missed just one game over the past three seasons and scored 18 goals during her career.
DiNunno continued to develop as an excellent forward by leading the team with 10 assists. She finished fourth on the team with 18 goals and also totaled 25 groundballs, 22 draw controls and 10 caused turnovers. It is the first time in her career she has earned an all-conference lacrosse award.
Murray, as mentioned, tied for the team lead in goals with 36 and earned an Eastern Division Player of the Week award this season. She had three game-winners this season and was a physical presence from the forward ranks. Murray won 25 draw controls and caused 17 turnovers.
The 2009 campaign was also the final season for head coach Naomi Radio, an excellent leader and teacher for the Lady Raiders who guided the team to 21 victories. The team made the PSAC Tournament in her first season with the club. Radio will concentrate her time with her family, including husband Tim and son Noah.
