Men's Swimming On the Cusp of Second Place Entering Final Day of 2009 PSAC Championships
Raiders remain in third place; just 28 points behind Clarion

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg men's swimming team continued its strong showing at the 2009 PSAC Championships with eight championship finishes to get within 28 points of second-place Clarion after the third day of competition from Cumberland Valley High School.

The 800-yard freestyle relay team of senior John Miller, freshman Richard Deley, sophomore Josh Nyce and junior Shane Wolter posted the top team finish for Shippensburg on Saturday with a third-place time of 6:58.67.

Saturday night's competition began with the 200-yard medley relay team of junior Nate Ryan, senior Gabe Oropollo, senior Brian Taylor and sophomore Tim Smullen finishing in fifth place with a time of 1:35.72.

Wolter continued his impressive championships with an NCAA 'B' cut time in the 400-yard IM to earn second place, finishing in a season-best 4:09.28. Nyce finished fourth in 4:11.92 and freshman Matt Smith finished fifth in 4:15.03, both season-best times. Ryan finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 53.24 seconds.

Miller earned a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, while Oropollo took seventh place in the 100-yard breaststroke. In the 100-yard butterfly, Evan Wentzel won the consolation finals in 52.56 seconds, while Taylor and sophomore Alan Snyder also scored in the consolation round. '

The final day of competition at the 2009 PSAC Swimming Championships begins on Sunday with preliminary qualifying at 10 a.m.
