Nate Nauroth recorded a pin in his finals match to win the 141-pound title on Saturday at the Washington & Jefferson Open while redshirt junior
Chris Barrick won the 174-pound title and redshirt junior
Brian Hindle placed second at 197 pounds to highlight a strong day of competition for the Shippensburg University wrestling team at the Henry Memorial Center.
Nauroth made a resounding statement on the mats Saturday with five impressive victories, including four by fall. He opened with a 55-second pin of West Liberty State's Nick Taylor, and then pinned Shippensburg teammate
Josh Bathras in 63 seconds to advance into the quarterfinals.
Facing UPJ's Mitch Spencer, Nauroth recorded his third consecutive pin with a victory by fall in 3:40. In the semifinals, Nauroth dealt with freshman Cody Myers and earned a 5-2 decision. In his fifth and final match of the day, Nauroth capped off his virtuoso performance by pinning UPJ's Adam Whetstone in 1:59 for the 141-pound title.
Barrick won his first four matches of the day, including two by pin, before a default in the finals match for the 174-pound title. His opening match was a pin of Mercyhurst's Tim McAndrew in 1:48, followed by a 7-1 decision over West Liberty State's Matt Littleton. After a 6-2 decision over Kutztown's Alex Depew, Barrick then earned a victory by fall in 5:50 over Adam Knepper of Slippery Rock's club team.
Hindle was competing in his second open tournament with Shippensburg after debuting last year at the 'Shorty Hitchcock' Memorial Classic and finishing second. On Saturday, Hindle recorded an 8-7 decision over Thiel's Todd Miller after automatically reaching the semifinals due to a medical forfeit. In the finals of the 12-wrestler bracket, Hindle dropped a 4-1 decision to West Virginia's Cameron Gallaher.
Sophomore
Russell Davidson climbed through the wrestlebacks at 133 pounds to earn seventh place for the weight class after recording three consecutive victories. Davidson earned a 10-1 major decision over West Virginia's Evan Lodder, a 15-0 technical fall over Manchester's Glen Cobb and a 7-3 decision over Kutztown's Mitch Voelker.
At heavyweight, sophomore
Tyler Zittle performed well in a total of five matches. He earned a 4-2 decision over West Virginia's Jesse Sigman before he was pinned in the second round by UPJ's Chris Dempsey. In wrestlebacks, Zittle earned two more victories to wrap up his day with a 3-2 record. Zittle recorded a 9-4 decision over West Virginia's Brandon Pollay and then pinned Thiel's Ian Prah in 37 seconds before dropping a 3-1 decision to Duquesne's Nadeem Farah, the eventual fifth-place finisher.
Freshman
Keith Dahlheimer started his open performance at 184 pounds with a pin of West Virginia's Ryan Fell in 2:20 before dropping a 7-5 decision to West Virginia's Matt Weston. Sophomore
Justin Morris earned a victory by fall in 1:56 during the first round of wrestlebacks.
In Barrick's bracket at 174 pounds were fellow Red Raiders
Nate Reese and
Joshua Lang. Reese earned a victory by fall in 1:45 over Waynesburg's Matt Zimmerman.
At 165 pounds, redshirt junior
David Sunderland earned an 18-5 major decision over West Virginia's Jeff Yeatman in the opening round and a 17-2 major decision in his first match during wrestlebacks.
Shippensburg will be working hard in the wrestling room over the next several weeks in preparation for the PSAC Wrestling Championships. The event will be held on December 5 from Edinboro University.
