Beckley, Fittery Chosen as Shippensburg's Student-Athletes of the Year

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University Athletics Department and Student-Athlete Support Services selected women's basketball sophomore forward Lauren Beckley and wrestling sophomore Steve Fittery as the 2008 Student-Athletes of the Year during National Student-Athlete Day on April 23.
Beckley possesses a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average and is a PSAC scholar-athlete and a dean’s list student. She has attended an NCAA leadership Conference, a team captain, and participates in local youth reading programs.
Athletically, Beckley was the PSAC Western Division Player of the Year and an All-East Region Player of the Year as well as a State Farm Coaches’ All-American. Additionally, Beckley was named a PSAC Winter Top Ten honoree.
Fittery has a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average and has served as a tutor and a supplemental instructor on campus. In addition to working multiple camps in our community, Fittery has been a wrestling co-captain and a Grandview Elementary School reading volunteer.
On the mat, Fittery was a PSAC champion, East Region champion and the runner-up at the Division II National Championships.
Additionally, head swimming coach Tim Verge was named the Supporter of the Year. Verge was given the award after being selected for his active participation on campus and in the local community as well as attending a number of sporting events during the past year.
The graduation rate among Shippensburg student athletes is 86 percent, and one-fifth of the student-athlete population was recognized as PSAC Scholar-Athletes last year. During the past two semesters, 34 Shippensburg student-athletes earned a 4.0 grade-point average and 13 teams earned a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher since the spring of 2007.
