Hess Wins 400 Meters, Lady Raiders Finish Third at PSAC Championships

Sophomore Mary Dell Records Two Provisional Qualifying Performances

INDIANA, Pa. - Freshman Erica Hess won the 400-meter dash and sophomore Mary Dell posted two NCAA-provisional qualifying efforts as the Lady Raiders finished in third at the 2008 PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday afternoon at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

The Lady Raiders totaled 107.5 points, while Slippery Rock won the championship convincingly with 203.5 points and Lock Haven finished second with 111 points.

Hess won the 400-meter dash with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 55.68 seconds that bested Slippery Rock junior Lacey Cochran by 21 one-hundredths of a second. She later earned a point with an eighth-place finish in the 200-meter dash.

Dell, meanwhile, posted another provisional effort in the 800-meter run by finishing second in 2:11.80. Millersville's Priscilla Jennings won the event with an automatic qualifying time of 2:10.22. In the 1,500-meter run, Dell posted another provisional effort of 4:41.85 and finished second only to Jennings. Freshman Abby Huber took third in the event with a time of 4:43.47.

Dell later combined with Hess, sophomore Shannon Hare and freshman Laura Henzy for second place in the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 3:52.27. Slippery Rock won the event in 3:50.71. The 400-meter relay team of Henzy, Hare, Hess and junior Siobhan Richards finished fourth with a time of 48.94 seconds, as Slippery Rock also won that event with a provisional time of 47.26 seconds.

Junior Michelle Morcom produced strong performances in the hurdle events, taking second place in the 100-meter event with an NCAA provisional time of 14.48 seconds and sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.17. Junior Siobhan Richards finished sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.78 seconds.

In the triple jump, freshman Rebekah Newhart finished fourth jumping 36-feet, 9-inches. Freshman Mary Kane earned sixth place in the steeplechase with a time of 11:57.5, while freshman Katie Frey posted a strong performance in the 3,000-meter run with a third-place finish in 10:24.15.

The 2008 Division II National Championships will be held from May 22-24 at the University of California Poly Pomona.
